About my last fifty years, in about 500 words.
After graduation from ELHS I went to college in Ohio---College of Wooster. It was then on to seminary and I was ordained a Presbyterian minister. I served churches all over the country---Ohio, Iowa, Michigan, California and lastly Pennsylvania. I was the pastor of Eastminster Presbyterian Church in East Lansing for ten years. That was kind of neat as my two sons both attended ELHS. Ministry was fun and interesting. I have done about 800 weddings (most are still married) and about 500 funerals (all are still dead). I have taken additional study in grieving and bereavement and have published numerous articles about grief and mourning.
I am in a second marriage and have two sons from the first. We also have two grandchildren. They are a real delight as all grandchildren are.
I retired 6 years ago and have had lots of time to travel---in 47 states, and about 25 foreign countries. For the last 12 years we have spent part of every October in Paris and southern France.
Over the years I engaged in many hobbies and activities. I learned to fly, did a lot of bicycling (rode cross country twice), and learned how to ski in the mountains of Utah and Colorado. Thirty years ago I became a scuba instructor and have dived all over the world. I am a trivia buff and that has allowed me to compete on a number of game shows including Jeopardy, Win Ben Stein’s Money and Millionaire. I have also done some regional contests around the country (I can name all the Presidents, but often can’t find my car keys). I do play some golf, and hope there might be an outing at the reunion.
I was a Republican in high school, but got radicalized by Viet Nam and the Civil Rights movement. I worked in the two Obama campaigns, mostly in voter registration programs in multiple states. I went to the 2009 inauguration but skipped the second one. I have not had dinner at the White House, but once ate a granola bar while standing in line for a tour—does that count as breakfast at the White House?
Five years ago I started doing volunteer work in Haiti, helping supervise a hospital and a nursing school. I go down every two months for a week to ten days. It helps that I speak French and Creole. I missed the earthquake three years ago, but have weathered 4 hurricanes on the island.
I live in Kittanning, PA, a small town north of Pittsburgh on the Allegheny River.
