Name in high school yearbook: Jay Stewart (but legal first name is John)

Address: Bolton, CT, but moving to Portland, OR in next year or so.

Email: jstewart@hartford.edu

Current life situation: Retired from teaching sociology at the University of Hartford; married with two children.

Family history: First marriage was an “open” marriage and ended in graduate school at University of Wisconsin. My second marriage (to Susan Randolph) started during my post-doc at Cornell and is still going strong. We have two children who have finally found their life goals – with major changes from their bachelor degrees. We strongly support LBGT rights.

Current hobbies and interests: Activist for environmental and social justice issues, lots of outdoor activities (hiking, backpacking, long bike trips, cross-country skiing, and many hours of rock climbing each week), and travel—just back from Cuba. Also enjoy working with Susan – an economist-- on her current project measuring how well countries achieve social and economic rights: www.SERFIndex.org

Claims to fame: Not much here, but did publish a revision of my dissertation: Drifting Continents and Colliding Paradigms: The Revolution in the Geosciences, (1990, Indiana University Press). Perhaps more significant, my brother (Dion) and I started the Outing Club at MSU in 1963 and it still exists.

Anything else: It is a small world! While riding up a ski lift in Oregon, I learned my seat companion was a sociologist and shared a joint academic appointment with her husband, which is something Susan and I had tried to get. So we had dinner with them to learn more details and found out she knew Kay Snyder (a 1963 ELHS grad), who went to Cornell, and her husband had recently interviewed at the Ford Foundation with Susan’s former boyfriend.

After ELHS: I got a BA in chemistry at MSU, a Ph.D. at University of Wisconsin (in sociology with a strong history of science component), and had a post-doc at Cornell. Susan and I traded academic destinations as we moved back and forth across the country trying to find academic jobs near each other. Ultimately she got one at UCONN and I got one at the University of Hartford. More details at: http://uhavax.hartford.edu/jstewart/
