Current Life Situation

Retired (2011):  Being reverse snowbirds, we spend our winters in Tempe, Arizona and in Morro Bay, California, and we spend our summers at Bass Lake, near Pentwater, Michigan.

            Spouse: Margaret Louise Lawson (married in 1968)  

Children: Matthew, Robert, Elizabeth.   Grandchildren: Katherine, Graham, Gavin.

Professional Biography

Anton Lawson is Professor Emeritus in the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University. Dr. Lawson received a B.S. (biology) from the University of Arizona, an M.S. (biology) from the University of Oregon, and a Ph.D. (biology education) from the University of Oklahoma.  During his professional career at Purdue University, the University of California Berkeley, and Arizona State University, Dr. Lawson  published more than 200 journal articles and more than 20 books including Science Teaching and the Development of Thinking (Wadsworth: Belmont, CA, 1995), The Neurological Basis of Learning, Development and Discovery (Kluwer: Dordrecht, The Netherlands, 2003), Biology: An Inquiry Approach (Kendall/Hunt; Dubuque, IA, 2011, 3rd, Ed.), and Teaching Inquiry Science in Middle and Secondary Schools (Sage: Thousand Oaks, CA, 2010). He received the Distinguished Contributions to Science Education Research Award from the National Association for Research in Science Teaching as well as the Outstanding Science Educator of the Year Award from the Association for the Education of Teachers in Science. He is a three time recipient of The Journal of Research in Science Teaching Award for the most significant research published during the year.
